Site Audit: Fix SEO Issues and Boost Performance

A site audit is a complete check-up of your website’s content and technical SEO. It helps identify issues that could prevent your site from ranking well in search engines—such as missing meta titles, broken links, poor keyword usage, or unoptimized images. With SEOPress, the audit runs automatically every time you update a post or page. It’s like having a built-in SEO assistant that helps you spot and fix problems before they affect your visibility online.

Connecting your Google Search Console account adds even more value, showing you real click and ranking data next to each URL. This way, you can focus your efforts where they matter most.

Overview – Understand Your Site’s SEO Health at a Glance

The Overview tab gives you a global picture of your SEO performance. It breaks down your results into five key categories:

  • Issues Detected – Total number of problems found across your site.
  • Ignored – Issues you chose to skip or that don’t apply to your SEO goals.
  • High Impact Issues – Critical problems that should be fixed first (e.g., missing meta titles or incorrect canonical URLs).
  • Medium Impact Issues – Important but less urgent issues (e.g., headings structure or nofollow links).
  • Crawled URLs – The total number of published URLs analyzed by the audit.

This summary helps you prioritize what to fix and shows how your site is improving over time.

Issues – Fix 13 Key SEO Problems

The Site Audit checks for 13 specific SEO issues on every page or post. Here’s what each one means:

  1. Canonical URL
Ensures that each page has a correct canonical tag, telling search engines which version of a URL is the main one to index.
  2. Structured Data Types
Checks if schema markup (like Article, Product, or FAQ) is correctly applied. This helps search engines display rich snippets in results.
  3. Last Modified Date
Verifies if your content has a recent “last updated” date. This can improve freshness signals in search rankings.
  4. Keywords in Permalink
Looks for target keywords in the URL. A keyword-rich permalink improves clarity for both users and search engines.
  5. Headings
Evaluates the use of H1, H2, etc., to make sure your content has a clear structure. Poor heading hierarchy can confuse both users and crawlers.
  6. Meta Title
Checks if your title tag exists and is optimized. Titles are one of the most important on-page SEO elements.
  7. Meta Description
Ensures your description is present and helpful. While not a ranking factor, it influences click-through rates in search results.
  8. Social Meta Tags
Verifies if Open Graph (Facebook) and Twitter Cards tags are set. These improve how your pages appear when shared on social media.
  9. Meta Robots
Ensures the meta robots tag is present and set correctly (e.g., index/follow). Misconfigured tags can prevent indexing.
  10. Alternative Texts of Images
Checks if images have alt text, which is important for accessibility, image SEO, and screen readers.
  11. NoFollow Links
Identifies links that use rel=”nofollow”. Useful to manage link equity, but overuse can weaken your internal linking strategy.
  12. Outbound Links
Reviews links pointing to external sites. Too many broken or low-quality outbound links can hurt credibility.
  13. Internal Links
Analyzes how well your content is linked together. Strong internal linking helps users and search engines discover more pages.

Scan: Detect Broken Links to Improve Site Quality

Automatically scan your site’s content to find broken or incorrect links that can harm SEO and user experience.

  • Launch the bot: Scan the latest content on your site—up to 100 posts/pages/custom post types by default—to detect 404 errors or unreachable URLs. Keep your site clean and error-free.
  • View scan results: Once a scan is complete, review a detailed list of broken links and their sources. Quickly locate and fix issues before they affect search rankings.
  • Custom scan limits: Need to scan more than 100 items? Head to the settings tab to increase the scan scope and cover more content in each analysis.

Settings: Customize How Your Site Audit and Link Scan Work

Fine-tune the way SEOPress audits your content and scans for broken links to match your workflow and website size.

Site Audit Settings: Control How and What Gets Scanned

  • Recipients: Enter one or more email addresses (comma-separated) to receive alerts once a site audit is complete. Stay informed automatically.
  • Post Types to Scan: Choose whether to include Posts, Pages, or any other public custom post type. By default, all public types are analyzed.
  • Scan Noindex Content: Enable this to include content marked as noindex. By default, noindex content is skipped to save time and resources.

Broken Links Settings: Adjust the Scope and Performance of Scans

  • Post Types to Scan: Select where the scanner should look—Posts, Pages, and Media are available. Focus the scan on what matters most.
  • Find Links In: Choose to analyze links found in post content or in the full source code of each page. Note: scanning source code is much slower.
  • Number of Items to Scan: Set how many posts/pages to scan at once (minimum 10, default 100). Increase the number for larger audits but expect longer scan times.
  • Scan Link Type: Enable this to check whether each link is internal or external. This adds detail to reports but may slow the scan.
  • Scan 404 Only: Focus only on links that return a 404 error. Speeds up the scan if you’re only looking for broken links.
  • Request Timeout: Set how many seconds to wait before a request is considered failed. Default is 5 seconds—useful for slow servers or unreliable URLs.
  • Clean Broken Links List: Automatically delete the previous list of broken links before starting a new scan. Keep your reports fresh and uncluttered.
  • Save Changes: Click to apply your new settings.

Schemas: Stand Out in Search with Rich Results

A schema (also called structured data) is a special type of code that you add to your website to help search engines better understand your content. For example, it can tell Google whether a page is about a recipe, a product, an event, or a review. This helps your pages appear with rich results—like star ratings, FAQs, or event times—which can make them stand out and attract more clicks. In short, using schema improves how your site appears in search results and makes your content more visible, clear, and engaging to both users and search engines.

Managing your schemas in SEOPress

The SEOPress interface makes it easy to organize and edit your schemas. Here’s how you can filter and manage them:

  • Filter schema list: You can view all schemas, or only the ones that are Published.
  • Search schema: Use the search bar to quickly find a specific schema by name.
  • Bulk actions: Select multiple schemas to edit or move them to trash in one go.
    • Options include:
      • Edit
      • Move to trash
  • Filter by date: Narrow down your view by selecting a specific month or view all dates.

Understanding the table columns

Each schema is listed in a table with helpful details:

  • Title: This shows the name of the schema, which helps you identify it quickly.
  • Data type: This indicates what kind of structured data it is—such as Article, Product, FAQ, Event, etc.
  • Post type: This shows where the schema is applied (e.g., Posts, Pages, or a Custom Post Type like “Products”).

Redirections: Keep Your SEO Intact and Users on Track

A redirection is a way to automatically send visitors (and search engines) from one URL to another. This is especially useful when you delete a page, change its URL, or merge content. Setting up redirections helps you avoid “404 not found” errors, improves user experience, and preserves your SEO rankings by transferring link value from the old page to the new one. Without proper redirections, visitors may end up on broken pages and search engines could downgrade your site’s performance.

Managing redirections in SEOPress

SEOPress gives you a powerful dashboard to control all your redirections and 404 errors in one place. Here’s how you can filter, organize, and take action:

  • Main buttons:

    • Import / Export Redirects – Upload or back up your redirection rules.
