Automatically generate your meta title and description with AI when you publish a post

SEOPress PRO can write your meta title and meta description for you, using AI, at the exact moment you publish a post. If you often forget to fill in these fields, this feature makes sure no post goes live without metadata.

Requirements: SEOPress PRO with the AI feature enabled, and an AI provider configured (see step 1).

Step 1: configure your AI provider

  1. Go to SEO > PRO > AI from your WordPress admin.
  2. In General settings, select your AI provider: SEOPress (AI Credits), OpenAI, DeepSeek, Gemini, Mistral or Claude.
  3. Enter your API key (or API token for SEOPress AI Credits) and select a model.
  4. Click Save changes.

If you want the AI to follow a specific tone or style, you can also fill in the Custom AI instructions field. These instructions apply to every AI generation, including the automatic one.

Step 2: enable automatic generation on publish

  1. Still in SEO > PRO > AI, scroll down to the Automatic generation on publish section.
  2. Enable Automatically generate the meta description with AI when publishing, if it is empty.
  3. Optionally, enable the same toggle for the Meta title.
  4. Click Save changes.

That’s it. From now on, when you publish a post with an empty meta title or meta description, SEOPress will generate the missing one automatically.

How it works

  • The generation only runs when a post goes from draft (or scheduled) to published. Updating an already published post never triggers it.
  • It only fills in empty fields. A meta title or description you wrote yourself is never overwritten.
  • It works for posts, pages and public custom post types, and also for scheduled posts published by WordPress.
  • Since the AI call runs during publishing, publishing may take a few extra seconds.

Troubleshooting

If no metadata appears after publishing, check the AI Logs section in SEO > PRO > AI: it lists any errors returned by your AI provider, such as an invalid API key or missing credits.

You can also restrict which user roles are allowed to use AI generation from SEO > Advanced > Security, in the AI generation section.
