You can automagically generate your SEO title, meta description, Open Graph and X cards tags based on your post content.
To do this, an OpenAI account is required.
Register to OpenAI
The first step is to sign in for free at OpenAI.com website.
Once done, go to your Dashboard > API Keys page to generate your first OpenAI API key by clicking Create new secret key button.

From the modal, enter a Name to quickly identify your key from the keys list. Select a Project and click Create secret key button.

Copy the key.
What information is sent to OpenAI?
To get better results and maximize our chance to have a relevant answer from the AI, we send:
- your post content (if not possible your post URL),
- your post language,
- your target keywords (and we ask to put at least one of them in the SEO metadata in return).
For alt text, we send the image file itself (read from your server when possible) and the language to write in.
Enable AI in SEOPress
Login to your WordPress admin.
Go to SEO, PRO, AI tab.
If it’s not the case, activate the AI feature by clicking the iOS toggle.
Then paste the OpenAI key in the dedicated field.
Save changes.
Add my OpenAI key to wp-config.php
By adding this code below:
define( 'SEOPRESS_OPENAI_KEY', 'XXXXXXX' );
You will store your OpenAI key in your wp-config.php file instead of your database. This is more efficient on a multisite network for example but also more secured.

Generate your title and meta description with AI
Now let’s try to make our first call to the AI. Edit the post, page or post type of your choice with Classic Editor or the Block Editor (Gutenberg).
Scroll down to the SEO metabox.
You will see two new buttons from the Titles settings tab called “Generate meta title with AI” and “Generate meta description with AI”.
Click on it.
Wait a few seconds and boom your title and meta description are automatically generated based on your post content.
Adjust the values if necessary, and that’s it!

Generate SEO metadata in bulk
Go to your post types list, select a few posts, then from the bulk actions select, choose Generate meta title with AI or Generate meta description with AI and click Apply.
Since SEOPress PRO 10.4, nothing is saved right away: a review window opens (Review AI meta titles or Review AI meta descriptions) so you can check every suggestion before it reaches your site.

Review the suggestions before saving
The suggestions are generated one after the other, and each one appears as soon as it is ready. A progress bar shows where the generation stands (for example Generating 3 of 10…). Click Stop generating to stop: the posts not generated yet are left out of the review.
For each post, the review window shows:
- its title, with a View link that opens the post in a new tab,
- the value saved today (Current:), or (empty) if there is none,
- the AI suggestion in a text field you can edit,
- a character counter against the recommended length (60 characters for a title, 160 for a meta description), with may be truncated when the text is longer.
Then, for each suggestion:
- edit the text if needed: an Edited by you badge appears,
- click Approve to keep it, or Discard to drop it,
- changed your mind? Click Undo next to the Approved or Discarded badge.
The bottom of the window counts the suggestions approved, discarded and still to review. Use Approve the N remaining to approve all the suggestions you have not decided on yet, then click Save N approved. Only the approved suggestions are saved, and an empty value is never written. The page reloads with a notice telling how many reviewed suggestions were saved.
Click Cancel (or close the window) to leave without saving. If suggestions are waiting, you are asked to confirm: Close without saving loses them and changes nothing, Keep reviewing brings you back.
Developers: to go back to the previous behavior, where every suggestion is saved as soon as it is generated without being shown first, use the seopress_ai_bulk_review filter. Its second argument is posts (post types list) or media (Media Library).
add_filter( 'seopress_ai_bulk_review', '__return_false' );

Your account cannot use the selected model
Some AI providers only allow certain models for a project or an API key. Since SEOPress PRO 10.4, when your provider refuses the model selected in SEO, PRO, AI, SEOPress PRO switches to another model of the same provider, starting with the cheapest ones, sends the request again and keeps using that model. The swap is written to the AI error log, for example:
To go back to the model you chose, allow it for your project in your provider dashboard, then save the AI settings again. Changing the provider, the model or the API key also resets the list of refused models; otherwise it is forgotten after six hours. If the account cannot use any of the available models, nothing is generated and the error says so.
Developers: the order in which models are tried can be changed with the seopress_ai_model_fallback_order filter. It receives the list of model names (the first one is tried first) and the provider.
Invalid image?
Confirm the attachment exists and is readable by WordPress. For remote or offloaded media, check that the server can download the file and that authentication or firewall rules do not block it.
Check the image type too: AI providers can only read JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP images (Google Gemini also reads HEIC and HEIF). Since SEOPress PRO 10.4, other types, SVG included, are refused before anything is sent to your provider, so they do not cost a request. Learn more in our guide to generate metadata for your images.
A local or protected site is not automatically excluded: reading an attachment from disk can avoid a public image download. It still needs a readable supported image, a suitable model and working outbound API access. This does not guarantee every local, protected or media-offloading configuration will work. If the error persists, send support the error message and reproduction steps without your API key.
Requirements for GPT-4/5 Vision
If you have selected this model, make sure to have at least made a $5 payment to OpenAI platform before using it.
SEOPress PRO can suggest SEO titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph and X card metadata from your content. This guide connects your own OpenAI API account. Review generated text before saving it.
